Course Description

  • Successful students of this program are awarded the Bachelor of Nursing Science (General) degree and are eligible to apply to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland, the nursing profession’s regulatory body. The program is offered in partnership with the Health Service Executive (HSE) West
  • The first three years are run within the academic year and include a combination of theory modules and clinical practice modules. Practice modules will require students to be in clinical practice for 35 hours per week
  • Year Four comprises clinical/theory instruction in semester one and a 36-week internship of clinical practice which runs from January to September
  • During their internship, the student will be an employee of the HSE West and receive a salary
  • The theoretical component comprises lectures, seminars, workshops, experiential learning, skills training, and reading time

Entry Requirements

Academic Requirements

A pass in at least six subjects in accordance with College requirements with at least:

  • GCE Advanced Level: Grade C in two recognized subjects and
  • GCSE Level: Grade C in four recognized subjects

Required GCSE subjects: English, Math, Lab Science

Additional Requirements
  • Originals or certified copies of school transcripts/examination certificates
  • For US Applicants a standardized test score is required (SAT/ACT Scorecards)
  • A copy of passport
  • Personal statement (max. 800 words) outlining academic interests, sporting and/or cultural interests, and reasons for wanting to study at NUI Galway
  • Two Letters of Recommendation
  • IELTS or TOEFL certificate
  • All applicants will be required to have medical screening and Police/Garda vetting: this will include medical assessment, and if necessary, vaccination before the first clinical placement, in accordance with the policies of NUI Galway and the Saolta University Health Care Group

  • IELTS : 6.50
    An average score of 6.5 across all components and a minimum of 6.5 in each band for the Academic version
  • TOEFL : 88.00
    A minimum score of 88 for the Internet-based TOEFL (iBT) with a minimum of: 20-23 Listening 20-22 Speaking 24-26 Writing 19-23 Reading
  • PTE : 61.00
    Minimum of 61, with a minimum score of 61 in each section
