Course Description

  • The program in Arabic at the University of Notre Dame will provide students with a solid foundation in the Arabic language and the nuances of its attendant cultures

  • As an Arabic major, students will learn to read, write, and converse through the department’s courses, whilst exploring history, literature, culture, religion, and media studies from classic and theological texts to modern works of literature

  • Students will work with expert faculty to build fluency in Arabic under the instruction of native speakers and holders of Ph. D.s in Arabic and related fields

  • Learning Arabic will not only develop a student's language skills but broaden their cultural perspective as they approach their studies from a multidisciplinary vantage point

Entry Requirements

Academic Requirements

Students are required to take 16 units during their high school career. This distribution will differ slightly based on the student’s intended area of study, but must include the following:


  • 4 units of English

  • 4 units of Mathematics - Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry (4 units preferred)

  • 2 units of Foreign Language (3-4 units preferred)

  • 2 units of Science (4 units preferred)

  • 2 units of History/Social Science (3-4 units preferred)
