Overview

Founded in 1965, Algoma University is a public university based in Ontario, Canada. This post-secondary institution is teaching-focused and student-centerd. The university’s origin occurred as the Algoma University College, a non-sectarian institution affiliated with Laurentian University. It took on its present name after earning its position as an independent university in 2008. Presently, many people refer to its as Algoma U or Algoma. This institute has affiliations with Universities Canada and Canadian Bureau for International Education as well as 38 global partner universities.

Algoma currently has a student enrollment of 1,600 students, among which 27% is international students from 30 countries. The university allows students to choose from more than 30 undergraduate programs. It also offers minors and specializations, certificates, experiential learning, online learning, and cooperative education. These fall under the following academic areas:

Aside from its central campus in Sault Ste. Marie, Algoma U operates across two satellite campuses, Brampton and Timmins. The university’s main campus offers housing facilities in three residences. The Arthur A. Wishart Library contains more than 700,000 books of different disciplines. Students and faculty have access to this library for academic and research purposes. The campus is close to departmental stores, cafes and restaurants, and chemist and stationery shops. Student-athletes participate in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport and Ontario University Athletics conferences. Students can also take part in intramurals. They have access to the George Leach Centre and can participate in athletic activities such as volleyball, basketball, badminton, and tennis. Health, wellness, and medical services are available on campus grounds. Besides, students can join a number of clubs, unions, and volunteer programs. The Department of Ancillary and Student Services oversees all of the facilities that students can avail themselves of on the premises.

Algoma University has built a successful network of alumni over the years. These alumni receive multiple benefits from the university’s very active alumni council. Some of the noteworthy names that call Algoma their alma mater are Michael Cachagee, Ryan Harnden, Sherley Fletcher Horn, Kevin Hodson, Josephine Mandamin, Roxanne Martin, and Joanne Robertson.
