Overview

Based in Sackville, New Brunswick, Mount Allison University is a primarily undergraduate public university focused on liberal arts. Founded in 1839, this university also goes by Mount A or MtA. It earned university status in 1849. Mount A has ranked as the top undergraduate university in the country 22 times in the past 30 years according to Maclean's magazine. No other university in Canada has matched this record. The university has many other firsts too, including being the first university in the British Empire to award a Bachelor's degree to a woman in 1875. It also opened the first university art gallery in Canada, the Owens Art Gallery. Mount Allison is a pioneer in the foundation of services for students with learning disabilities. This university is also the first university in Canada to:

  • Grant a Bachelor of Arts to a woman in 1887
  • Offer a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1941
  • Provide internet access across the entire campus
  • Offer a Canadian Studies program

MtA is currently home to over 2,300 students including international ones representing more than 50 different nationalities. Students can choose from more than 50 programs with five bachelor’s degrees and one master’s degree. They can also pick from pathway agreements and English language programs. Mount Allison’s beautiful and historically rich campus provides housing facilities to students in eight residences. The university has over 240 varsity athletes who participate in nine varsity sports and continue to bring home trophies. Students can join one of eight club teams and partake in ten intramural sports. The athletic center, gymnasium, pool, alumni field, fitness center, dance studio, and civic center provide athletic and recreational facilities. Students can expect accessibility services, financial help, safety and security, high-quality technology, and career development while studying at this university. Health and wellness services are also available on-campus.

Mount Allison University has an alumni network of around 25,000 graduates. Some of the notable alumni of the university include Robert Barritt, Kate Beaton, Winthrop Pickard Bell, Rick Black, Harold Lothrop Borden, and Kate Braid.
