Based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and also known as NSCAD University, the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University is a Canadian post-secondary art school. Established in 1887 by Anna Leonowens, the university went by the name Victoria School of Art and Design to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria. In 1925, it started going by Nova Scotia College of Art. The school adopted the name Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 1969. In the same year, the institute began granting undergraduate degrees and in 1973, it started granting graduate degrees. Finally, in 2003, it took on its present name. Among other things, this university is the first degree-granting art school in Canada.

With 927 students calling NSCAD University home, 25% of whom are international, the university is a hub for diversity and inclusion. Students can choose from over 180 courses including 27 online classes. They also have the option of choosing from more than 20 undergraduate, graduate, post-baccalaureate, and certificate programs. These programs and courses fall under the following seven divisions:

The Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University has three campuses, the Fountain Campus, Port Campus, and Academy Campus. All of these campuses are in downtown Halifax. The Fountain Campus houses the departments of Craft, Design, Fine Arts, and Media Arts. Spanning 70,000 sq. ft., the Port Campus is home to the Foundation, Craft, Design, and Fine Arts divisions. With only the Media Arts division on the premises, the Academy Campus has room for numerous facilities. These facilities include equipment for film production, space for a studio, edit suites, sound rooms, screening, and animation room.

Although on-campus accommodation is unavailable at NSCAD University, its students receive residence hall facilities from Saint Mary’s University, University of King’s College, Granville Hall, and Atlantic School of Theology.
