Overview

The University of Victoria is a public research university in the municipalities of Oak Bay and Saanich in British Columbia, Canada. Often referred to as UVic or Victoria, one can trace its roots to Victoria College. Established in 1903, Victoria College was the first post-secondary institution in its province. Its reincorporation as an independent institute with full autonomy occurred in 1963.

UVic hosts over 22,000 students yearly, more than 4,500 of whom are from 118 countries around the world. This culturally diverse group of individuals can choose from over 280 undergraduate and graduate programs. These programs fall under the following schools and faculties:

The University of Victoria is a hub for sports and recreation aside from being a global leader in academics. The campus houses sports courts, youth camps, restaurants, pubs, art galleries, movie theatres, and student clubs. Students can also take part in games, events, and activities organized by the university.

Victoria's main campus is one of the many properties owned by it. The Queenswood campus is now a national laboratory. The university also has Legacy Art Gallery on Yates Street, a small area on Broadway, and Jeanne S. Simpson Field Studies Resource Center in Lake Cowichan under its name. The university also affiliates with 79 Fellows of the Royal Society of Canada, 14 members of the Order of Canada, 11 Rhodes Scholars, 7 Guggenheim Fellows, 2 Killiam Prize winners, and some Nobel Prize winners.
