Overview

The University of Waterloo is a public, research and innovation university. Its home is in Ontario, Canada. Students and faculty often call it Waterloo, UW, or UWaterloo. It started its journey as a semi-autonomous entity of Waterloo College. Back in 1956, it was under the University of Western Ontario. In 1959, UW became a separate entity and institution.

Waterloo has 42,000 full and part-time students. It also has 113 undergraduate programs for high school, transfer, and international students. There are also 180 programs for postgraduates. 22% undergraduate and 40% graduate students are international. These students come from over 200 different cultures. The University of Waterloo values its diversity. It has 259 delegations, 61 of whom are international. Over 220,000 alumni reside in 151 countries. There are 155 student exchange partnerships and 243 active agreements in place. With six faculties in place, this university focuses on arts, health, mathematics, science, and the environment. These faculties affiliate with 12 schools and four institutions. All the faculties are on four campuses. They are on the campuses of Waterloo, Kitchener, Cambridge and Stratford. Among them, the Waterloo campus is the home base and main campus.

UWaterloo has unique strategic integration. It incorporates teaching, academic excellence, entrepreneurial spirit, experiential education, and impact-driven research. These core values make it different from its competing universities. Students have the opportunity for work-based learning and this opportunity allows its students to leave with up to 2 years of paid work experience. The institute prides itself on being a beacon for creators, explorers, and boundary-pushing thinkers. Waterloo students take risks and work towards building their entrepreneurial skills. Velocity is a Waterloo entrepreneurship program. It has shown support to 400+ companies. Thus, it helped 474 entrepreneurs raise $12.9 billion and create over 5000 jobs.

UW celebrates the importance of curiosity-driven research and discovery in 30 research institutes. It has collected research funding of $247.7 million from private-public investors and collaborators. The Office of Research is Waterloo’'s central point connecting scientists associated with this university to opportunities for funding and services. Ideas start at UW. The Office of Research helps convert these ideas into opportunities.

The University of Waterloo also works towards overcoming the discriminatory status quo existing in our society. The President’s Anti-Racism Taskforce (PART) addresses anti-racism and anti-oppression. It also helps to build inclusivity at the University of Waterloo through its work. The university shows BIPOC representation in its diverse faculty, student, and staff population.
