Overview

Established in 1969, Vancouver Island University is a public university operating in coastal British Columbia, Canada. Founded as Malaspina College, the university earned degree-granting power in 1995. In 2008, the institute finally earned university status and took on its present name. Nowadays, many people also refer to it as VIU. The Higher Education Academy nominated this university as a finalist for the Global Teaching Excellence Award in 2018.

VIU currently provides education to over 14,500 students, more than 2,000 of whom are from 95 countries around the world. Students can choose from 120+ bachelor’s, master’s, and pathway degrees and programs, technical certificates, and diplomas. These degrees and programs fall under the following areas of study:

Vancouver Island University operates three campuses in Cowichan, Nanaimo, and Powell River as well as the Parksville/Qualicum Centre.
