Overview

One of Ireland’s younger universities, Dublin City University is nonetheless a globally renowned institute. Formerly known as the National Institute of Higher Education, this university, which also goes by DCU, came into being in 1975. In 1980, it admitted its first students, and in 1989, achieved university status.
In 2016, four other education institutions became a part of the DCU:

  • Church of Ireland College of Education
  • All Hallows College
  • Mater Dei Institute of Education
  • St. Patrick’s College

Five campuses make up the entirety of this university. The main campus is in Glasnevin. The St. Patrick’s and All Hallows campuses are in Drumcondra, with the Sports campus in St. Clare’s. Lastly, the DCU Alpha Innovation campus is also in Glasnevin. The Glasnevin, St. Patrick’s, and All Hallows campuses all have student residence options. Students have access to several support services including:

Across these campuses, DCU offers programs across five faculties, each overseeing a number of schools. These include the Faculties of:

  • Engineering & Computing
  • Humanities & Social Sciences
  • Science & Health

As well as the:

  • DCU Business School
  • DCU Institute of Education.

The university also offers a comprehensive distance learning program, DCU Connected, with 1,200 students enrolling online. Overall, the university hosts 13,315 full-time students, of whom 12% are international. Altogether, DCU offers over 200 programs.
Dublin City University has a strong research and enterprise focus. Work placements are an important component of DCU degree programs. Its Innovation and Enterprise Center – DCU Invent – partners with corporations, entrepreneurs, and researchers, to apply university research to industry. This commercialization and industry transfer unit undertakes many functions. These include accessing research funding, creating licensing opportunities for innovative technology, and creating and helping start-ups.
DCU’s strong research focus is also present in its number of research facilities and partner institutes. The core interdisciplinary research themes DCU prioritises are:

  • Democratic & secure societies
  • Educational research & innovation

Over 50,000 DCU graduates are in good industry positions, with one of Ireland’s highest graduate employability rates. It has an extensive network of graduate entrepreneurs who form the DCU Alumni Entrepreneur Network.
