Founded in 1972 as a Regional Technical College, Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology began conferring degrees by May 1977. Growing steadily throughout the decades, the institute got its current name in 1997. Frequently referred to as GMIT, the institute is due to merge with the Institute of Technology, Sligo and Letterkenny Institute of Technology to become a technological university. This strategic alliance, known as the Connacht-Ulster Alliance, is one of several the institute is part of.
GMIT operates across five campuses. Of the Galway, Cluain Mhuire, Mayo, Letterfrack, and Mountbellew campuses, the Galway campus is the administrative base of the institute. Across these campuses, the institute oversees the following schools:

  • Galway International Hotel School
  • School of
    • Business
    • Design and Creative Arts
    • Engineering
    • Science and Computing

Collectively, these schools offer over 200 courses for undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional development programs and springboard courses. Over 9,000 students enrol for undergraduate and postgraduate programs at this institute. GMIT’s international student body represents 75 nationalities. The institute also has exchange partnerships with education providers in China, Saudi Arabia, the USA, Australia, India, and Thailand.
GMIT students have access to a range of support services and facilities, including:

  • Libraries
  • Catering
  • IT facilities
  • Sports facilities
  • Career Services
  • Counselling
  • Student Health Unit
  • Disability Support
  • Financial Support
  • Student Laptop Loan Scheme

The GMIT Falcons represent the institute’s sports clubs. GMIT’s Student Union oversees the operation of all clubs and societies, as well as several student support functions. This includes accommodation assistance in finding a place to stay close to campus.
The Galway and Mayo campuses are also home to GMIT iHubs. These incubation units provide research, support, and resources to medical technology and digital technology entrepreneurs and start-ups. Almost 40 rapidly growing start-ups began here, and 45 transitioned into becoming successful companies. These have also led to the creation of over 750 jobs. A handful of GMIT’s client companies include Tection Sports, Heartpoint Global, and CrannMed.
The iHub’s work is closely tied to GMIT’s research efforts via its seven research centres:

  • Business Research Innovation Network Group (BRING)
  • Heritage Research Group
  • Irish Concussion Research Centre (ICRC)
  • Marine and Freshwater Research Centre (MFRC)
