Course Description

  • Through structured projects, students develop skills and knowledge to enable them to craft furniture, architectural joinery, and wood products to the highest standards using a range of traditional and advanced manufacturing technologies
  • The course integrates the use of a wide range of CAD/CAM systems and equipment and introduces common metal working and upholstery techniques
  • A complementary set of professional skills are key element of student learning. Operations management, lean manufacturing, estimating and CAD engineering are studied with a focus on their application in the furniture, architectural joinery, and wood manufacturing industries
  • A year-long work placement in year 3, in Ireland and overseas, ensures graduates gain invaluable experience along with first-hand understanding of current industry practices and procedures
  • All students undertake a common first year before deciding which degree option to take. Subjects are designed to provide students with an introduction to furniture making techniques, materials, and equipment ​

Entry Requirements

Academic Requirements
  • The general minimum Leaving Certificate entry requirement is a Grade O6/H7 or better in six Leaving Certificate subjects including English/Irish and Mathematics, two of which must be passed in higher level papers at Grade H5 or higher
  • A Level (+ GCSE O level) - Cambridge International
    Applicants are scored on the basis of a maximum of 4 different subject results at A and/or AS level. For scoring purposes, the following combination of A Levels and AS Levels are permitted:
    • The best 4 A level results in a single sitting
    • The best 3 A level results in a single sitting, plus the best AS level result from the previous or the same sitting
    • The best 2 A level subject results in a single sitting, plus the best 2 results at AS level from the previous or the same sitting
    • The best 1 A level subject result in a single sitting, plus the best 3 results at AS level from the previous or the same sitting
    • The best 4 AS level subject results in a single sitting
