Overview

Located at the heart of London, Birbeck is a major associate college of the University of London. Established in 1823, it used to be London Mechanic’s Institute. Later in 1920, it became a college under the University of London. It is the only public institution in London to provide major evening classes.
The campus lies in the Bloomsbury area of London, known as a major student spot. The surrounding area contains several famous museums and galleries. The areas of West End, Soho, Covent Garden, and King’s Cross are also nearby. Students get easy access to explore and learn from these.
There are five academic schools containing 19 departments. Birkbeck offers various courses including evening classes, part-time and online lectures. National Student Survey (NSS) ranks it first in London for part-time course satisfaction in 2021. The college has an overall 90% course satisfaction (NSS 2021). Some courses with above 85% satisfaction rate are Maths, Geography, Biology, Language, English, Philosophy, and more.
Around 14,000 students attend this college each year. Over 1,000 overseas students come from 120 countries. This college has an 83% student satisfaction (NSS 2021), placing it fourth in London. This college offers five partnered halls and some collegiate halls under the University of London. Both full-time and part-time students enjoy housing options.
