Overview
The university was founded as East Alabama Male College, a minor, more humble private liberal arts college that was founded in 1856 and opened its doors in 1859. In 1967, Auburn University at Montgomery became a separate recognized campus. Since moving to a 500-acre site east of Montgomery in 1971, the college has grown quickly. AUM currently has over 5,200 students enrolled.
Auburn's mission is to encourage and inspire the students to be their best selves and to realize their ambitions. The public charter and the Auburn Creed both emphasize the need of instilling in the students a strong work ethic, positive character qualities, and basic values of honesty and respect. It inspires students to make significant contributions and to lead their peers in effecting positive change. All land-grant colleges, including Auburn University, have a responsibility to develop moral character and instil active social responsibility in their students.
