Overview

The Pennsylvania State Institution is a public land-grant research university affiliated with the state of Pennsylvania. It has campuses and facilities all around the state of Pennsylvania. Penn State Institution, founded in 1855 as the Farmers' High School of Pennsylvania, became the state's only land-grant university in 1863. Penn State is now a large research institution that focuses on teaching, research, and public service. The Institution Park campus has been designated as a "Public Ivie," or a publicly funded university that provides a quality education like that of the Ivy League.

In addition to its land-grant status, it is a member of the sea-grant, space-grant, and sun-grant research consortiums, making it one of just four such colleges in the world. The University Park campus, the biggest administrative core, is located in the Borough of State College and College Township. Hershey is home to the College of Medicine. Penn State is a single institution with campuses spread across Pennsylvania. Throughout the state, there are 19 commonwealth campuses and 5 special purpose campuses. The academic colleges of Penn State include:

  • College of Agricultural Sciences
  • College of Arts and Architecture
  • Smeal College of Business
  • Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications
  • College of Earth and Mineral Sciences
  • College of Education
  • College of Engineering
  • College of Health and Human Development

  • College of the Liberal Arts
  • College of Medicine
  • Ross and Carol Nese College of Nursing
  • Eberly College of Science
  • Schreyer Honors College

  • Pennsylvania College of Technology

It is one of the country's major universities. It boasts the largest dues-paying alumni association in the world. Across all of its sites, the institution offers more than 160 majors. Its educational objective comprises undergraduate, graduate, professional, and continuing education programs delivered in-person and online. In collaboration with Sidney Kimmel Medical College, the university provides an expedited Premedical-Medical Program. Motivated students at Penn State can get a bachelor's degree in science and an MBA two to five years sooner than those who follow the usual path.

On the University Park campus, there are approximately 850 student groups ranging from sports clubs to fraternities. For most sports, Penn State competes in the NCAA Division I FBS and the Big Ten Conference.
