Overview
The Pennsylvania State Institution is a public land-grant research university affiliated with the state of Pennsylvania. It has campuses and facilities all around the state of Pennsylvania. Penn State Institution, founded in 1855 as the Farmers' High School of Pennsylvania, became the state's only land-grant university in 1863. Penn State is now a large research institution that focuses on teaching, research, and public service. The Institution Park campus has been designated as a "Public Ivie," or a publicly funded university that provides a quality education like that of the Ivy League.
In addition to its land-grant status, it is a member of the sea-grant, space-grant, and sun-grant research consortiums, making it one of just four such colleges in the world. The University Park campus, the biggest administrative core, is located in the Borough of State College and College Township. Hershey is home to the College of Medicine. Penn State is a single institution with campuses spread across Pennsylvania. Throughout the state, there are 19 commonwealth campuses and 5 special purpose campuses.
