Overview

Emily Carr University of Art + Design is a public art school and university in British Columbia, Canada. Established in 1925, this university started off as the Vancouver School of Decorative and Applied Arts. It also formerly went by the name of Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design. This institute earned university status in 2008 before adopting its current name. Presently, many people refer to it as ECU or ECUAD. The university is one of the oldest post-secondary institutions in British Columbia and the first purpose-based institution of Arts + Design in Canada.

With a total full-time student population of 2,000, ECU houses 1,900 active non-credit students. It is also home to 471 international students from 51 countries. The university extends a range of professional certificates, specialty courses, undergraduate, graduate, and teen programs across various disciplines. It also operates artist-in-residence programs. The academic structure of this institute falls under the following four distinct faculties:

  • Faculty of Culture + Community
  • Ian Gillespie Faculty of Design + Dynamic Media
  • Audain Faculty of Art
  • Jake Kerr Faculty of Graduate Studies

ECUAD has a campus in Vancouver with state-of-the-art buildings, pathways, green patches, and parking areas. This campus has achieved a LEED Gold certification. Although housing facilities are not available, students can enjoy other facilities on-campus. The facilities and services include:
