Overview
Caltech is a world-renowned research and engineering institute that brings together some of the world's most brilliant minds and cutting-edge technology to answer basic scientific concerns and critical societal issues.
The California Institute of Technology was founded in 1891 as Throop University in Pasadena, California, and was renamed in 1920.
Caltech is a 124-acre campus in Pasadena, California, that is sustained entirely by private donations.
The California Institute of Technology's aim is to advance human understanding and improve society by combining research and teaching. While educating excellent students to become creative members of society, they tackle the most challenging, basic problems in science and technology in a singularly collegial, interdisciplinary environment.
JPL is managed by the Institute for NASA, which sends probes to study the planets of our solar system and measure changes on Earth. Caltech also owns and runs large-scale research facilities including the Seismological Laboratory and a global network of astronomical observatories like the Palomar and W. M. Keck Observatories, as well as cofounding and managing LIGO.
